Description: All companies, regardless of their size and the industries in which they operate, are facing greater challenges with respect to identifying and managing the risks in their external environment related to their day-to-day activities.  Surveys indicate that risk management will continue to be a major concern for members of the senior management team and that they expect to encounter potential crises from several areas including corporate governance, natural disasters, litigation, physical infrastructure and government regulation.

It is becoming routine practice for larger companies to create a corporate risk manager position and to have that position report directly to the chief executive officer; however, companies of all sizes, including those without the resources of a Fortune 500 business, can significantly enhance their ability to cope with risks and uncertainties by implementing a risk assessment program.  Risk assessment refers to the company’s process for identifying and addressing the business risks it faces in conducting its activities.  Risk assessment is an important element of a company’s overall compliance program since an obvious source of potential liability for the company is failure to comply with applicable laws and regulations.

This Business Counselor Institute program will cover some of the key issues associated with conducting risk assessments including:
  • definitions and categories of risk,
  • examples of common legal and business risks,
  • best practices for conducting risk assessments,
  • key steps in conducting effective risk assessments,
  • purposes and uses of risk assessments,
  • planning the risk assessment process,
  • preparing an organizational risk profile and
  • preparing and using final risk assessment reports.
Forms and other practice tools that can be used to work with client on risk assessments will also be presented and discussed. This Business Counselor Institute program will cover some of the key issues associated with conducting risk assessments for companies of any size.
