Description: The presenter is interested in human expression and how it affects the perception of criminal defendants in court. The presentation starts by examining the “villain” stereotype that is imposed on the defendants by the jury and the strategies to counter it. The presenter refers to a common phrase that suggests the importance of empathy for being an effective trial lawyer. However, the presenter acknowledges the difficulty of empathizing with someone who is accused of wrongdoing.

The presentation then explores this topic from a different angle that could alter the way the lawyers view their clients. The presentation also suggests some exercises that could enhance the lawyers’ ability to connect with their clients on a human level.

The presentation then shifts to psychology and introduces Carl Jung and his concepts that have been used by filmmakers for creating captivating stories. The presenter analyzes these concepts, gives examples, and shows how they can be applied in the courtroom to tell the clients’ stories.
