Crowdfunding is a method of using the Internet and social networks to raise capital, and it is projected to raise an estimated $2.8 billion worldwide in 2012. This number is expected to grow rapidly after the upcoming implementation of the crowdfunding provisions of the JOBs Act, which will legalize the sale of crowdfunded securities through authorized internet portals.
