Description:

Part 1: Current Zoning Issues within the City of Chicago, Illinois

The panel will consider issues-substantive and procedural - which arise out of the 2003 Amendment to the Chicago Zoning Ordinance, including the bonus system, planned development thresholds and parking requirements. The participants, each knowledgeable in the zoning field, will share their personal insights, interact with each other and answer questions from the audience.

Topics include:

  • What are the Zoning Requirements within the City of Chicago, IL
  • How to Determine whether a Parcel of Land is Zoned According to Architectural Drawings

Part 2: Current Issues Involving Eminent Domain and How Chicago is Effected Thereby

Eminent domain is the legal process whereby the government, the state, an authorized municipality or other governmental agency seizes privately owned real property for a governmental use. In such instances, according to law, the entity condemning the real property must compensate the owners of said property for the loss and use of the property. Recently, Chicago has seen an increase in eminent domain matters whereby the City of Chicago has condemned and taken possession and legal ownership of private property.

The second half of this seminar will examine eminent domain, its effects on private property owners and explore what options, if any, private property owners have in contesting or disputing the taking of their property by a governmental body.
