This presentation will address four hot topics in healthcare-related cybersecurity: ransomware, cloud storage, the recently released Health Care Industry Cybersecurity Task Force Report, and enforcement.
We will discuss the recent ransomware attacks in relation to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) guidance on ransomware involving protected health information (PHI). We will also provide recommended best practices when maintaining PHI in the cloud, from complying with the OCR’s cloud guidance to considering certain contractual terms to better protect the organization’s data.In addition, we will analyze the findings and recommendations from the recently released Health Care Industry Cybersecurity Task Force Report on Improving Cybersecurity in the Health Care Industry.
We will conclude by discussing recent enforcement trends. This is especially pertinent as the OCR is on pace to issue more resolution agreements than in any previous year and issued its two largest penalties to date in 2016 and 2017. We will outline the trends we have seen in these enforcement actions.
