Description:
With over 300 sea and river ports handling 20 percent of the worlds maritime trade, the United States ports present a potential target for terrorist attacks. More than 15 million cargo containers pass through US ports and only a fraction are inspected by Customs. Terrorists could potentially exploit this port vulnerability, putting cities around the country at risk.
The proximity between the Puget Sound ports and their city centers adds an additional level of threat to the city. Thus, Greater Seattle is a great location to explore port security, learn about steps to ensure regional safety and the impact a disaster would have on this business community. A threat to one of our ports would not only affect national trade but would also have global implications.
