Compared to the general population, lawyers have high rates of depression, substance abuse, suicide, and secondary trauma. In this program, the authors introduce a range of mental health issues that affect lawyers in practice. Competent representation requires the legal skill, thoroughness and preparation reasonably necessary for the representation of a client.
In this hour, we will explore possible reasons for the elevated incidence of mental health issues in the legal profession. We also identify barriers to treatment such as stigma associated with mental health problems and denial that is commonplace and pervasive in the legal profession. Finally, we will discuss how we can begin to identify issues in ourselves and in our colleagues and provide guidance on what to do with that information.
