Description: Similar to the ways that chlorinated VOCs in the environment have driven many expensive clean ups and protracted litigation,  a less-known class of synthetic fluorinated chemicals have come onto the environmental scene that are likely to have a similar or potentially greater impact on the environmental industry.  Per- and polyfluorinated compounds have exceptionally widespread industrial use;  are highly resistant to natural degradation; and have a bioaccumulating effect in the food chain.   Although for decades these compounds were not subject to investigation, the USEPA has issued a Health Advisory Level in drinking water of 70 parts per trillion due to their high toxicity.  In February, the state of Minnesota received one of the largest natural resource damage settlements resulting from the release of per- and poly-fluorinated compounds into the environment.  The rising awareness of possible impacts of these chemicals in water supply systems has resulted in the discovery of contamination and a growing number of multi-party claims in the U.S. and around the world.   This presentation provides a foundational understanding of this class of compounds, their presence in the environment, challenges to investigating and mitigating releases and an update on how Wisconsin is planning to approach this evolving topic.
