Description: The webinar program will feature the 2017 winner of the Corporate Pro Bono Partner Award in the Small Law category -- Arconic Inc. and Alcoa Corporation in partnership with Meyer, Unkovic & Scott (MUS) and Pittsburgh Pro Bono Partnership (PPBP), for their commitment to the Landlord Tenant Project (Project).

The panelists will talk about the inception and development of the partnership, how the pro bono partnership is sustained, and various strategies to deepen engagement.  Specifically, panelists representing each of the partners will cover in more depth the following areas:

The aim of the Project is to assist low income individuals facing landlord-tenant and other housing legal issues. These issues are of paramount importance and involve a basic need of all people: safe and affordable housing. MUS and PPBP—a collaboration of legal departments, law firms, the Allegheny County Bar Foundation, and Neighborhood Legal Services Association—launched the Project in August 2013. Alcoa, Inc. joined the Project in September 2015, and when the company split into Arconic and Alcoa in November 2016, the legal departments at both companies continued their efforts. Through the Project, attorney volunteers represent families and individuals who have been denied housing choice vouchers and public housing.

All three organizations are deeply involved in supporting the Project: 11 of Arconic’s 27 attorneys and one of its five paralegals, along with seven of Alcoa’s 12 attorneys and one of its three paralegals, work with 18 of MUS’s 56 attorneys on the Project.
Volunteers with the Project staff a weekly shift with a hotline, advising low income individuals on landlord-tenant issues. Hotline callers leave a voicemail for a volunteer who returns that call within 48 hours. Approximately 1,000 callers have received advice utilizing this convenient option.

When appropriate, volunteer attorneys also provide brief services, such as help negotiating settlements between tenants and landlords. In addition, volunteer attorneys have represented 20 clients at housing choice voucher and public housing denial hearings. Those attorneys have been successful in securing redetermination of eligibility in each matter, obtaining admittance into public housing, or a housing choice voucher for each client they have represented.

Each matter is staffed with an attorney from Arconic or Alcoa and one from MUS. Through the PBPP, the pro bono teams have access to mentoring, training, and ongoing support from attorneys at the Neighborhood Legal Services Association and the Allegheny County Bar Foundation.
