Description: While cross-border relationships with foreign customers, agents, distributors, manufacturers and other business partners involve substantial levels of interaction and exchange between the parties, perhaps the most challenging transnational collaboration is the; “international joint venture”. International joint ventures encompass a wide variety of transactions whereby the participants from different countries pool their resources to cooperate in the achievement of a common objective. In the transnational context, this frequently involves one company entering a foreign market through a joint venture arrangement with a foreign firm, but many joint ventures are more flexible, and often more complex, than that. International joint ventures may be used to share risks, achieve and maintain economies of scale, efficiently and successfully gain access to new markets in reliance on the experience and resources of a local party and tap into financial resources that may not be available internally or through other outside sources.
This three part series from the Business Counselor Institute will provide a comprehensive introduction to the art and science of creating and managing international joint ventures. The first part will cover Structuring, Negotiating and Forming International Joint Ventures. Subsequent parts will cover Operation and Managing of International Joint Ventures and Termination of International Joint Ventures. Each session will include discussion of checklists, forms and other practice tools that can be used to guide client through the exciting and challenging process of “going global” with international joint ventures.
