Description: It has long been known that lawyers and law students have especially high rates of alcohol problems. We will discuss how those problems evolve in both personal and professional contexts, and how they can be identified and addressed. Attorney Faneuf will bring the perspective of an attorney with relevant lived experience, and Dr. Fortgang will provide a perspective based on many years of clinical work with alcoholism and with lawyers. We will also discuss available forms of help and treatment, including the Lawyer Assistance Program, a free and confidential resource available to attorneys and law students across the country.

Dr. Jeffrey Fortgang, a licensed psychologist and alcohol/drug counselor, has been on the staff of Massachusetts Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers since 1998. Prior to that, he directed and held other positions in a number of Boston area hospital/clinical programs, and formerly served as an Instructor in Psychology for Harvard Medical School Department of Psychiatry. He also maintains a private practice in Newton, Massachusetts. He is the co-author of The Full Weight of the Law: How Legal Professionals Can Recognize and Rebound from Depression (ABA, 2017).

Attorney Daniel Faneuf owns and manages the Faneuf Law Group, LLC, a Massachusetts civil litigation firm focusing on sexual assault, abuse and personal injury cases. Attorney Faneuf's accomplishments have been recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, the Boston Globe, Telemundo as well as other publications. Prior to entering the field of law, Attorney Faneuf was a headliner at New England's largest comedy club, Improv Asylum.
