Description: “We spend so much time preparing the money for the people, and very little time preparing the people for the money.” Every family needs open, candid conversations about money, as early as possible. Encouraging clients to have these discussions as early as possible helps avoid litigation, set appropriate expectations, maximize respect for family values and traditions, efficiently transfer wealth from generation to generation, and allow for efficient business succession planning. Open conversation also enables families to plan for the unexpected, including special needs or incapacitated beneficiaries, blended or second marriage families, changes in economic circumstances and changes in the tax landscape. Join Trust and Estate Litigator Andrew Egan (Bressler Amery & Ross, P.C.) & financial advisor James Ciprich (RegentAtlantic) for a wide-ranging discussion on the need to encourage money talks within our client’s families, strategies to clients to open up and engage the “elephant in the room”, and how attorneys must look beyond the estate planning documents they draft to make sure their planning hits its mark for their clients’ families.

Andrew Egan is one of New Jersey’s premier fiduciary litigators. He focuses his practice on navigating emotionally-charged, high stakes probate, trust and guardianship litigation. Andy is an experienced trial attorney with a history of success in guiding clients to the most efficient business result in contentious disputes.

Andy has significant experience representing individual and charitable beneficiaries; fiduciaries including executors, trustees, guardians, and persons acting under powers of attorney, and is frequently appointed by courts to handle difficult or contentious matters. He handles disputes involving challenges to wills and trusts or TOD beneficiary designations; contested guardianship involving millions of dollars in assets; accounting proceedings and other challenges to fiduciaries’ management of the assets in their care; and “corporate divorce” disputes among partners or owners of closely-held or family businesses. Andy also has significant experience detecting, preventing and remedying fraud and financial abuse of elderly or otherwise vulnerable people.

Andy is a member of Bressler's Senior Issues: Counseling and Litigation Defense group. The lawyers in this group have a shared interest in providing counsel to corporate clients who confront issues affecting seniors.

Andy is able to leverage strong persuasive skills and level-headed tactical decision-making to navigate the financial as well as the emotional contours of a dispute, to secure optimal results for his clients. He also excels at developing creative or “outside the box” approaches to litigation.

Andy is active in the local and state bar, serving as a co-chair of the Essex County Bar Association Chancery Committee, a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association Select Committee on Equity Jurisprudence and a member of the American Bar Association Probate and Fiduciary Litigation Committee. Andy is also a member of the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey, and the Estate Planning Council of Northern New Jersey. Andy is a 2014 graduate of the American Board of Trial Advocate’s National Trial Lawyer’s College at Harvard Law School, and has been named a “Rising Star” in probate litigation for eight consecutive years by Super Lawyers magazine.

Before joining Bressler Amery & Ross, Andy was a litigation associate at an AmLaw 100 law firm in New Jersey, and served as law clerk to the Honorable Walter Koprowski, Jr., P.J.Ch., a Probate and Chancery judge sitting in Essex County, New Jersey.

Jim Ciprich advises clients on financial planning and investment management issues. He joined RegentAtlantic in 2007 as a Financial Advisor and has served as Chair of the Financial Planning Committee and the Risk Management subcommittee. He serves a broad range of clients, with a particular focus on wealth management for retirees and those considering retirement community options. Jim founded and co-chairs the Firm’s Senior Solutions specialty practice.

He is regularly asked to speak at continuing care retirement communities, client events, and is frequently quoted in the media. Jim currently serves as the President of the Estate and Financial Planning Council of Central New Jersey, and also serves on an advisory council to the MIT AgeLab. He holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification. He has an MBA from Rutgers Graduate School of Management and a BA in Economics from Rutgers College, and has served as an Adjunct Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University where he taught prospective financial planners in the CFP® program.

Previous to joining RegentAtlantic, Jim was a wealth management specialist at USI Bertholon Rowland. There, he advised high-net-worth attorney clients on investing, insurance and financial planning issues, while working with multiple county and state bar associations. He has also served on the board of trustees for the Morristown United Methodist Church where he volunteered his time in youth education, finance committee and audio/video committee. Jim has spent recent summers also volunteering with Appalachia Service Project, rebuilding homes for underprivileged families. Prior to his career in financial services, Jim held several marketing positions in the music industry and is the only RegentAtlantic employee to have RIAA certified gold and platinum albums on his office wall.
