Description: Following years of preparation, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation was approved and went into effect on May 25, 2018. Several countries and states within the United States waited on reaction by the U.S. Federal Government. Mindful of the potential inactivity by the federal government, numerous U.S. states announced legislative proposals to adopt their own privacy laws. The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 was the first of an expected wave of privacy bills seeking to protect consumers at the state level. In fact, the CCPA has been followed by more than a dozen similarly proposed legislations by various U.S. states. This program will discuss various state law proposed legislations, differences between the proposed legislations, which legislations have been enacted into law and when those legislations will go into effect.
