Description: Women and men lawyers differ in their development of alcohol use disorders, depression, stress, other mental illness; symptoms; willingness to get help; and most effective types of treatment. Learn to recognize the gender differences and help and resources available for men and women lawyers. 
 
Studies show that lawyers are at greater risk for alcohol use disorders, depression, other mental illness and stress than members of other professions or the general population. Women and men attorneys differ in the ways and reasons that these problems develop, their symptoms, their willingness to get help and the types of treatment that are most effective. Stigma is a particular issue for women. Learn about these gender differences and how to recognize problems, reach out to offer help and the resources that are available for men and women in the legal profession. 
 
Presenter(s): 
Joan Bibelhausen is the Executive Director of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers (LCL), based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ms. Bibelhausen, a member of the Bar of the State of Minnesota, received her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and has significant additional training in the areas of counseling, mental health and addiction, diversity, employment issues and management. She has spent more than two decades working with lawyers who are at a crossroads because of mental illness and addiction concerns as well as work/life balance, stress and related issues. A member of the MN State Bar Association and the American Bar Association, among others, she has served on the ABA Commission on Lawyers Assistance Programs (CoLAP), has chaired CoLAP’s Education Committee and is on its Advisory Commission and Conference Planning Committee. She has chaired the MSBA Life and the Law Committee and also served on the MSBA Board of Governors. Ms. Bibelhausen has developed and presented numerous CLE and other programs and has written on mental health and addiction, career and life balance and satisfaction, stress, diversity, and other issues of concern to the legal profession.
