Description: Join Alton B. Harris, partner in Nixon Peabody LLP, for this important program about combatting gender discrimination and increasing gender diversity in the legal profession. Mr. Harris first identifies the subtle and generally unconscious gender stereotypes that are pervasive throughout the legal profession and the biases they foster against women lawyers. He then presents a series of practical, effective steps men and the legal organizations they manage can take to combat these biases and remove the obstacles they create for women to advance in their legal careers on a basis comparable to men.
 
Presenter(s): 
Alton (Al) B. Harris, Esq., a founding partner at Ungaretti & Harris, is currently a partner in the law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP, into which his firm recently merged. He is a frequent writer and lecturer on the financial markets, financial regulation, and corporate governance. As an adjunct professor of law at Northwestern University Law School, he teaches courses on the regulation of derivative products and the financial markets. He also has served as an adjunct professor in the Graduate Program in Financial Services Law at IIT – Chicago Kent College of Law, where he taught courses on the regulation of money managers. Among his many honors are the following and recognitions are the following: Illinois Super Lawyers – Banking & Financial, 2005-2012; named by The National Law Journal as one of the 50 outstanding securities lawyers in the United States; and The Best Lawyers in America©,, 2007-2016, Litigation - Securities, Securities/Capital Markets Law, and Securities Regulation.
Mr. Harris is a co-author with Andie Kramer of the book, Breaking Through Bias: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work, scheduled for publication in May of 2016 http://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Through-Bias-Communication-Techniques-ebook/dp/B011DCQYTY. The book, according to the authors, “provides a how-to series of unique, sensible, and effective techniques for women to use to break through gender bias in the workplace and win at the career advancement game.” He is also co-author with her of “Taking Control: Women, Gender Stereotypes and Impression Management,” published in the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois Newsletter, Winter 2014.
