Description:
The Energy Bar Association and the Southeastern Energy Society Present Convergence of Electric and Natural Gas and its Effect on Smart Grid and Demand Side Resources
The use of natural gas for electric generation continues to grow. Such reliance has raised concerns regarding the need for coordination between the electric and gas industries. It, along with direct customer use of natural gas, has also put price pressure on certain demand side resource technologies. In November 2013, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued Order 787, addressing the Communication of Operational Information Between Natural Gas Pipelines and Electric Transmission Operators (Docket No. RM13-17-000). In May 2013, The North American Electric Reliability Corporations (NERC) released the 2013 Special Reliability Assessment – Accommodating an Increased Dependence on Natural Gas for Electric Power. This program will provide an overview of Order 787 and the NERC report and discuss the effect of the natural gas and electric convergence on the deployment and use of smart grid and demand side technologies.
Featuring John N. Moura, Director of Reliability Assessment of NERC, attendees will learn about the NERC framework for analyzing the different risks that can affect reliability, ways to minimize vulnerabilities and areas where coordinated inter-industry efforts could provide enhanced system reliability. Business representatives of the electric and natural gas industries will provide additional insight regarding their unique perspectives, including Keith Bass, ESP, LLC, an energy consulting firm, and Mike Frey, Vice President, Gas Supply, Operations of the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia and Public Gas Partners, Inc. Peter K. Floyd, Partner, Alston & Bird LLP, will moderate the panel.
