West LegalEdcenter Gives Attorneys a ‘360’ View of Legal Industry’s Hot Topics – And an Edge in the Courtroom

Date: September 8, 2008
Press Contact: Shawn Stavseth

Why are some attorneys such successful litigators? They anticipate their opponents’ arguments and integrate those claims into their courtroom strategy. Today, West LegalEdcenter launched a new online series of programs that can help all attorneys view legal issues through the eyes of their opponents. West LegalEdcenter’s “360” series of webcasts allows users to draw on the varied viewpoints of presenters who work at law firms, corporations and government agencies and learn about the newest developments in topics such as privacy law – while fulfilling continuing legal education (CLE) requirements at the same time.

The 360 webcasts cover legal hot topics, such as mortgage foreclosure and privacy law, from the perspectives of attorneys working at a government agency, a law firm or within a corporation. Each speaker shares his or her view on the topic for approximately 15 minutes.

Three series of 360 webcasts are scheduled to begin this month:

  • A series on privacy law is now available at www.westlegaledcenter.com and features three webcasts covering privacy enforcement, Internet privacy, and privacy issues and company branding. The speakers include Joel Winston, the associate director of the Division of Privacy and Identity Protection, part of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission; Andrew Serwin, the chair of the Privacy, Security and Information Management Group at Foley & Lardner LLP; and Tina Stow, assistant chief privacy officer at ChoicePoint.
  • A three-part series on records management will begin in September and provides an introduction to records management and compliance readiness. Future webcasts will cover the technical issues behind records management (October) and the creation of a well-crafted compliance program (November). The presenters will be attorneys Browning Marean and Kathy Owen, co-chairs of the Electronic Discovery Readiness and Response Group at DLA Piper; Hanns Köhler-Krüner, director of Global Education Services at EMEA; Laura Kibbe, the director of Electronic Discovery Services at Thomson Litigation Consulting; and West author Jay Grenig.
  • A series on mortgage foreclosure will also debut in September and addresses reverse mortgages, subprime litigation and regulatory compliance issues facing attorneys. Participating speakers include K&L Gates attorneys Laurence Platt and Steve Kaplan and Arthur Axelson, a partner at Reed Smith.

“The 360 webcasts by West LegalEdcenter will offer attorneys an unprecedented view of the latest developments affecting the legal industry,” said Lee Ann Enquist, vice president, West Professional Development. “The innovative, well-rounded presentations exemplify West’s leadership in providing new educational programs and tools for busy attorneys.”
