With legislation pending from the Obama administration regarding the repeal of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, and the nation's capital likely to become the latest jurisdiction where gays and lesbians can legally wed, West LegalEdcenter now offers programming by the National LGBT Bar Association – presented by Celesq® AttorneysEd Center – on gender-based diversity issues.

Three continuing legal education programs are currently available on demand at WestLegalEdcenter.com:

  • Priorities for the LGBT Agenda in a New Administration – Key leaders of major LGBT advocacy groups identify critical legal issues.

  • Relationship Recognition through a Federal Lens – Litigation strategies focusing on Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) may provide relief from the broad impact of federal discrimination against same-sex couples. With recent filings in the Boies/Olson suit and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts challenging DOMA on 10th Amendment grounds, Federal courts are becoming central to the same-sex marriage issue.

  • Federal Courts, The Nine Supremes and LGBT Equality – Some experts predict that within one term, President Obama could get Democratic majorities on nine of the 13 appeals courts. Will they understand, and come down on the side of, LGBT equality?

Each program is an LGBT Bar Association event presented by Celesq and provides 1.5 total CLE credits in numerous jurisdictions.

“These are timely programs,” said Lee Ann Enquist, vice president, West Professional Development. “The National LGBT Bar Association offers the sharpest minds in the LGBT community, and Celesq AttorneysEd Center has a well-earned reputation for producing high quality CLE programming.””

“With breaking news occurring daily concerning gender-based diversity issues, we are excited to participate in this effort with West LegalEdcenter and the National LGBT Bar Association and to offer programs in this very important area to attorneys throughout the country,” added Michael Mirsky, chief executive officer, Celesq.
