Description: The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was enacted to protect
content owners and their online businesses. Included are
precautions against consumers illegally using or sharing the
owners' digital materials. Critics say content owners and companies
that manage digital rights are actually discouraging the growth of
digital information when they assert copyright protection pursuant
to DMCA. Two recent cases, Felten v. RIAA and Universal v.
Reimerdes, highlight the problems of public fair use access to
digital information under the DMCA's anti-circumvention provisions.
The speakers will expand upon the specific circumstances of each
case and how the outcomes may affect future access to digital
content. The speakers also will address current initiatives aimed
at remedying this situation.
