Lawyers face challenges in advising clients on corporate social responsibility (CSR) codes. The tools learned in law school – legislative jurisdictions, interpreting statutes, analyzing court decisions – don’t obviously apply to ‘voluntary’ CSR codes.

Yet lawyers owe a duty of care to their clients. Many would agree that risk management advice that stopped at what is strictly legal would be incomplete, and ill serve today’s corporate client with diverse stakeholders. How should lawyers incorporate CSR standards into their practices?
