The objective of the Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility CLE is to familiarize participants with various research strategies for searching primary and secondary legal materials, such as case law, court rules, statutes, law review articles, and treatises pertaining to legal ethics, and professional responsibility. We will also discuss basic computer-assisted legal research tasks, such as retrieving documents by citation, issue searching, digest searching, and verifying primary law using the KeyCite® citation research service, in the context of legal ethics and professional responsibility research issues.
The Legal Ethics and Professional ResponsibilityCLEcontains the following components and skill sets:
- Learn the available resources online for researching professional responsibility issues.
- Learn how to research in ABA Formal Opinions, cases, and statutes related to legal ethics and professional responsibility.
- Learn how to research what constitutes reasonable legal research.
- Discuss the extent of an attorneys duty to research and have knowledge of the law.
- Learn the importance of verifying primary law and how to verify primary law using KeyCite.
- Learn how to research the legal definition of the practice of law.
- Learn how to use the West Key Number System to research professional responsibility issues.
- Discuss the precedential effect of unpublished opinions.
- Learn how to keep on top of changes in the rules of professional conduct.
