In this presentation, Janine Arvizu uses the systematic deficiencies defined in the 2009 NAS Report A Path Forward to explain why even without funds for expert consultation data users should not blindly accept a laboratorys reported results. Arvizu will detail how a person doesnt have to be a trained scientist to recognize many of the problems that plague analytical laboratories, nor do you have to work as a scientist to identify poor laboratory practices. Common sense can take you a long way toward a goal of understanding whether a forensic laboratorys report is valid and reliable, and instead of accepting results on blind faith, Arvizu will provide you with 10 essential steps to take in every case involving evidence subjected to a laboratory.
