Description: After being elected or appointed to the bench, a new judge must make a professional shift from advocate to impartial arbiter.  Part of the transition requires familiarity with the code of judicial conduct, which has rules for all aspects of a judge’s life, both on and off the bench.  This program will discuss advice for new judges in winding-up a law practice, including completing pending cases, duties to clients, disposing of an interest in a law firm, receiving fees for work completed before taking the bench, and disassociation from a law firm.  It will also cover the inquiries a newly chosen judge should make about charitable, political, and business activities to evaluate what changes are necessary to conform to the judicial ethics rules.  (Disqualification issues will be covered in a West LegalEdcenter program to be held on November 18.)
