Recognizing the extreme hardships caused by the recent earthquake and aftershocks in Haiti, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State have made significant policy announcements that will impact Haitian nationals currently in the U.S., U.S. Permanent Residents stranded in Haiti, and Haitian orphans who are in the process of being adopted by U.S. citizens. The panel of speakers will detail those policies and procedures to ensure you are in the best position possible to assist those in need of immigration advice as a result of the ongoing tragedies in Haiti. They will also address the emerging issues regarding infrastructure rebuilding.

Mavis Theassa Thompson was elected President of the National Bar Association at the organization's 83rd Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas. On August 7, 2009 she was sworn in as the 67th President of the NBA and the tenth woman to hold the office.
Mavis is the former Circuit Clerk for the City of St. Louis. She made history by becoming the first female Circuit Clerk and during most of her tenure was the only African-American female holding a citywide elected office. Mavis is a member of the Missouri and Illinois Bar Associations. She is also a member of the American Bar Association (serving on the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Committee and the ABA Advisory Committee), the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, the Women Lawyers Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and is an alumnus of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, which is the largest constituency of the National League of Cities.
