About this Conference

Con men, Charlatans, and Conspirators: Will Attorneys Soon See Their Own “Madoff”?
October 27, 2009
Guthrie Theater, Wurtele Thrust Stage – Minneapolis, MN
What made Bernard Madoff do what he did? How did the system fail to prevent him as well as provoke him?  What is preventing attorneys' clients from the kind and scale of fraud Madoff pulled on his clients?

The legal profession is unique in its power to regulate itself. Is self-regulation working? Are the Model Rules of Professional Conduct sufficient to prevent the deterioration of ethical and civil behavior?

This course explores the circumstances and motivation of the full range of unethical and uncivil conduct. Specifically, the course examines the impact external forces have on professional behavior and whether the existing system will sufficiently deter the scale of unethical behavior shaking our society.

The Guthrie tackles this topic by focusing on readings of the play FAITH HEALER as well as actual transcripts from trials, depositions, and other real life events.

The live performances will spark a colorful debate from a moderated panel. Covering a range of disciplines, the panel will approach the issue from legal, ethical and psychological perspectives.

One of the confirmed panelists is Egil “Bud” Krogh, a lawyer who became famous as an official of the Richard Nixon administration, and who was imprisoned for his role in the Pentagon Papers break-in and events that eventually led up to Watergate.

FAITH HEALER, by Brian Friel
An extraordinary modern masterpiece, Faith Healer is an immensely personal and powerful play about faith healer Frank Hardy, his wife Grace and talent manager Teddy. Haunted by shared memories, they present multiple facets to the story and of themselves through four monologues: how they impact one another, how they become entangled together and are broken by a final, fatal event.
