Data Security and Privacy in the Age of Social Media and Employee-Owned Devices

The number of employees utilizing social media websites that directly or indirectly implicate the company is steadily increasing. Companies are increasingly permitting employees to access company systems with their own laptops, PDAs, tablets and similar devices or store company data on these devices. To meet the challenges created by the ever-increasing presence and use of these devices, employers need to stay up-to-date on the latest legal issues and best practices to protect themselves against costly lawsuits. This seminar will explore how to minimize employer liability by developing policies that restrict social media website access at work, and discuss the extent to which an employer is responsible for employee privacy and data security on employee-owned devices.
