Get a ‘360’ View of Legal Industry’s Hot Topics – And an Edge in the Courtroom

We’ve launched a new online series of programs that can help you view legal issues through the eyes of your opponents. The “360” series of webcasts allows you to draw on the varied viewpoints of presenters who work at law firms, corporations and government agencies and learn about the newest developments in today’s hot topics – while fulfilling continuing legal education (CLE) requirements at the same time.

The first 360 webcasts cover legal hot topics, such as mortgage foreclosure and records management. Privacy law and environmental law will be coming out later this Fall . You’ll hear the perspectives from leading government agency, law firm and corporate experts. Each speaker will share his or her view on the topic for approximately 15 minutes.

Mortgage Foreclosure

Mortgage Market Update Part I - New Environment, New Rules
Now Available On Demand
Many regulatory aspects of the mortgage lending market have been fundamentally changed in the wake of the 2008 Subprime lending debacle and resulting credit crisis, not the least of which is the federal government takeover of government sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. There have been amendments to the Truth in Lending Act and the Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act (HOEPA) and sweeping federal legislation affecting mortgage lending policies and practices. What effect will all these changes have on the mortgage lending industry, and what do those changes mean for your clients and their business?

Mortgage Market Update Part II - The Reverse Mortgage Outlook
Live Webcast: October 30, 1:00 - 2:30 EST
Recent changes in the rules governing reverse mortgages will have a significant impact on loan products that have grown in popularity among seniors who have a lot of home equity but not a lot of cash. Recent federal legislation raised the amount that can be borrowed and established a national loan limit. However, there are high costs associated with reverse mortgages and a great deal of risk in borrowing against home equity, particularly in an unstable economy.

Mortgage Market Update Part III - Litigation, Workouts, and the Future
Live Webcast: November 20, 1:00 - 2:30 EST
Litigation in the mortgage industry is rising in conjunction with the number of homeowners defaulting on their home loans. Accusations of predatory lending by financial institutions and poor government regulation of the mortgage industry have led to a number of lawsuits involving lenders, borrowers, and shareholders. What are the best options for borrowers facing default? What about lenders who do not want to be seen as villains who kick people out of their homes, but also have an obligation to their shareholders?

On-demand versions of these programs will be available within one week of the live webcast.

Addresses reverse mortgages, subprime litigation and regulatory compliance issues facing attorneys.  Participating speakers include K&L Gates attorneys Laurence Platt and Steve Kaplan, and Arthur Axelson, a partner at Reed Smith.

Records Management

A three-part series on records management will begin in September and provides an introduction to records management and compliance readiness. Future webcasts will cover the technical issues behind records management (October) and the creation of a well-crafted compliance program (November).

Records Management Part I - Compliance Readiness
Now Available On Demand
Developing a fully compliant records management program remains beyond the reach of many companies even though several years have passed since the corporate accounting scandals that brought about a new era of oversight. Identifying, storing, circulating, and disposing of vital records can be a daunting task for any compliance officer. Where do you begin? Into which category of compliance does your company’s data fall? What is the scope of a compliance officer’s responsibility and authority in the management of that data?

The presenters are attorneys Browning Marean and Kathy Owen, co-chairs of the Electronic Discovery Readiness and Response Group at DLA Piper; Hanns Köhler-Krüner, director of Global Education Services at EMEA; Laura Kibbe, the director of Electronic Discovery Services at Thomson Litigation Consulting; and West author Jay Grenig.
