This session is comprised of practical, hands-on examples designed to give participants the analytical tools with which to confront copyright issues facing publishers. Working from photographic examples, participants will gain an understanding of the copyright analysis that publishers and courts engage in when determining whether a work infringes a copyright. Participants will be shown how to work with the text of the Copyright Act of 1976, including provisions on the definition of copyright, copyrightable works, exclusive rights of the copyright owner, and transferability. Mr. Dowd will also cover common myths and misconceptions about copyright. Expect a lively program, with audience participation as judge and jury. Registrants can expect to leave the seminar with a better understanding of everyday copyright issues in publishing such as:
-
how to tackle "fair use" questions
-
determining who owns a copyright
-
using legal resources to answer author and editor questions
-
does this work infringe someone else's copyright?
