Date: June 25, 2009
Press Contact: Shawn Stavseth

Sessions from the 29th annual Garrett Corporate and Securities Law Institute are now available on-demand through West LegalEdcenter.

Made possible by collaboration between West LegalEdcenter and Northwestern University School of Law, the 10 online courses offer practical tips for operating in today’s legal environment and cover topics such as mergers and acquisitions (M&A), executive compensation, accounting and governance.

Of particular interest to attorneys seeking continuing legal education (CLE) credits is the mock M&A argument before Justice Jack B. Jacobs of the Delaware Supreme Court. The mock argument and discussion address key process concerns, conflict and fiduciary issues, and the availability and practicality of various legal remedies.

Other courses of note include:

  • A conversation with Richard G. Ketchum, chief executive officer of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in Washington, D.C.
  • What Securities Counsel Needs to Understand About Accounting Today, which covers global accounting developments; fair value accounting and its intersection with the world financial crisis; disclosing contingencies and current issues with off-balance sheet accounting, securitization and consolidation.

Registration information: A list of Garrett Institute courses is available at West LegalEdcenter. To enroll, select the course of your choice and continue through the checkout process. The mock Delaware Supreme Court argument costs $125; the remaining nine courses are $99 each.

As a program sponsored by Northwestern University School of Law, the Garrett Institute is recognized for mandatory CLE credit in most states. The Garrett Institute is the pre-eminent securities law conference in the Midwest. It is the only Midwest conference that brings together senior officials from the Securities and Exchange Commission and leading securities practitioners.

The Institute was established in memory of Ray Garrett, Jr., chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a member of the faculty of Northwestern University School of Law, and a partner in the Chicago office of Gardner, Carton & Douglass LLP.
